Stephen Wright was a novice photographer in the early 80’s based in Manchester and was lucky to get the opportunity to shoot his favourite band – The Smiths.

The first shot of Morrissseys “bum and flowers “ was taken at the Free Trade Hall Manchester in 1984. It was also voted as one of the 50 greatest rock photographs of all time by NME.

As for the Salford Lads photo…..When people think of the Smiths this is the first to come to mind! The combination of an unmistakeably northern England location and the relaxed pose of the band lend the image a subtle humour and poignancy that chimes perfectly with the group’s musical output.

The image was shot on a dark and rainy day in December 1985, with the group at the peak of their powers. A copy hangs in the Manchester Art Galley and it has been accepted as part of the National Portrait Gallery collection.

The shot of Morrissey and Marr was taken at a BBC appearance in 1985 and sadly used to announce the bands demise on the front cover of the NME
