Michael Spencer Jones is one of the UK’s leading and most influential rock photographers of the 90’s, responsible for creating some of the most iconic sleeve art in recent British rock history, including The Verve’s Urban Hymns and the first three Oasis albums Definitely Maybe, (What’s the Story) Morning Glory and Be Here Now. Influenced by the great American portrait photographers, Alfred Stieglitz and Edward Steichen, and fascinated by the surrealist work of Storm Thorgerson and the early Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin covers, Michael’s influence is evident in the photographs created for Oasis and the Verve during the Britpop era.
Michael decided to take a different path to his fellow Bournemouth College of Art students, where he secured a distinction, and chose Manchester over London just ahead of the most exciting decade in the region for the UK’s music scene. Michael Spencer Jones’ first commission was to photograph The Stone Roses at Spike Island.
In 2010 Michael Spencer Jones compiled his extensive collection of Oasis cover artwork into a beautifully produced portfolio box set containing signed limited edition photographs of his iconic artwork. The collection, Out of the Blue, named after the unknown band’s first press shoot (1993) whilst recording in Manchester’s Out of the Blue studios, is best summed up by The Observer who wrote, “The prize for the most lavish artefact of the year goes to Out of the Blue – The Oasis Photographs, showcasing the band’s iconic single and album sleeves.”
