When Eric Algra started out, like most photographers he pointed his camera at something he was passionate about: rock and roll.

He found he had a talent for capturing that special ‘live’ moment and was recruited to the staff of Roadrunner, a seminal Australian music paper.

From 1979 to 1985, an exciting period in Australian rock music, in his home town of Adelaide, Eric photographed countless overseas and local acts including, The Clash, Bob Marley, Stevie Ray Vaughan , INXS, Cold Chisel, Midnight Oil and The Angels, producing a body of work he still prizes.

In this period he contributed photos to Clinton Walker’s book Inner City Sound and was principal photographer for Underground in the City of Churches by Tim Kelton. Eric also provided photographs for album covers for local Adelaide acts such as The Lizard Train, Exploding White Mice, July 14 and others, forming friendships and working relationships with many musicians, some of which continue to this day.

Eric has been exhibiting regularly since 1998 in both group and solo shows. In 1998 he won both The Ilford Trophy for the highest-scoring print and the Athol Shmith Award for excellence in black and white at the Australian Professional Photography Awards.

Eric now lives in Melbourne and concentrates on his fine art photography.
