The first photographer to work for America’s legendary Rolling Stone magazine, Baron Wolman, will be in Australia in September to launch this first-hand account of the halcyon days of rock n’roll and his memorable encounters with the rock stars of the day. Baron’s new book ’Every picture tells a story…. The Rolling Stone Years’ will be launched in conjunction with an exhibition of Wolman’s photographs
Baron will be at The Raw Gallery to sign copies of his new publication Saturday 24th September 11am-1pm.
Fueled by the music and the times, Rolling Stone magazine was founded in 1967 by Jann Wenner. Among his friends interested in working on the project was the then 30 year old freelance photojournalist, Baron Wolman. During his three year tenure with Rolling Stone, Wolman’s lens captured the royalty of the 60’s and 70’s pop and rock explosion. This collection of pictures and the stories behind them cover some of the most significant artists and events in the history of rock n’ roll.
The Rolling Stone Years makes it easy to see why Wolman’s photographs became Rolling Stone’s graphic centerpiece during the three years they were published regularly in the magazine. Over 40 years later, those same photographs, picture memories of the ‘60s, are now widely exhibited and collected. And Baron’s long-time mantra, “Mixing Business With Pleasure Since 1965,” continues to be his guiding light. “You can’t plan for a career like mine,” he says. “Yes, I chose to be a professional photographer but my tour of duty with Rolling Stone was a fortunate accident, a gift from the photo gods.”

The Raw Gallery is pleased to add the work of talented contemporary UK photographer Andrew Cotterill to our roster of artists.
Andy eschews set up studio portraiture, aiming instead to capture images that are a snapshot of a genuine moment in time. Says Cotterill; “I love the skill of dealing with the person you’re photographing and trying to get the best out of it. I’m not after the subject’s soul. I’m looking for a true representation of them at that given moment. It might come out nothing like you planned, but that’s the fun of it- it’ll never be the same twice.”
Andy’s images of iconic musicians such as Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, the late, great Desmond Dekker, John Cale and post punk lyricist Mark E. Smith sit comfortably alongside contemporary artists such as The Strokes, Jarvis Cocker, Arctic Monkeys, Pete Doherty and Kanye West among others. You can read his full bio here

‘Mixed Tape’ Pop-Up shop – 11 Yarra Place, South Melbourne
A combination of street art frontage and the lure of some of Melbourne’s best coffee has begun the transformation of Yarra Place, South Melbourne into one of the city’s new cultural hotspots. The ‘Mixed Tape’ Pop up shop is the latest step in the precinct’s evolution & The Raw Gallery is pleased to be a part of this brilliant opportunity.
This temporary design focused store will offer an array of high quality individual pieces, curated by a small group of individuals from some of South Melbourne’s best galleries & retailers.
A mixed tape reflects the musical tastes of its compiler, can range from a casually selected list of favorites or can been viewed as a conceptual mix of pieces linked by a theme or mood. It’s also a highly personal statement tailored to the tape’s intended recipient & the Mixed Tape pop-up is no exception. A combination of international fine art photography, vintage fashion, menswear, street boards and homewares have been carefully edited and laid out into the mix – creating an artistic statement greater than the sum of its individual parts.
Open 10am until 4pm for five days only, this unique space will open to the public on Friday the 17th December and will continue to run on Saturday 18th, Sunday 19th, Thursday 23rd & Friday 24th before disappearing at 4pm on Christmas Eve.

As part of The Raw Gallery’s policy to offer the finest ‘pop culture’ related imagery, we are now representing photographer Eve Arnold’s Marilyn Monroe collection here in Melbourne.
Eve Arnold began photographing while working at a photo-finishing plant in New York City in 1946. In 1954, Arnold’s fresh quality and intelligent choice of subject matter brought her to the attention of Robert Capa, the head of Magnum Photos – the prestigious international cooperative of photographers. Capa invited her to join the group and she became its first American female member. Her mastery of the colour processes and techniques popular in the 1950s was extensive and assured, although she worked for preference in black-and-white.
Arnold became a star photographer for Life magazine during its heyday, capturing public figures such as Senator Joseph McCarthy and General Eisenhower at revealingly unguarded moments. She had a special affinity with Marilyn Monroe, whom she met when both were relatively unknown. “She was going places but she hadn’t arrived,” Arnold recalled. “It became a bond between us… Marilyn was very important in my career. I think I was helpful in hers.”
Arnold’s collection of Monroe images were taken between 1951 and 1960 with the photographer permitted on set to capture the behind the scenes moments on what became the actress’ final film ‘The Misfits’.
Each black and white photograph is a limited edition hand-printed silver gelatin print produced from the original negative by Eve’s long-standing photographic print-maker Glen Brent. Colour images are produced using the Lambda (Digital C-Type) fine art printing method and all images come with certification.

We are pleased to announce that we are now the Australian representatives for acclaimed American photographer Neal Preston.
Preston has worked closely with rock royalty such as Led Zeppelin, The Who, Bruce Springsteen, Queen, David Bowie, Fleetwood Mac, Madonna and hundreds of other luminaries and his archive stands as one of the music industry’s single most extensive collections of photographs.
Although Neal is probably best known in rock circles as Led Zeppelin’s U.S. tour photographer in the mid-1970’s, his rock-and-roll travels have taken him around the globe many times. He has visited Russia with Billy Joel, Europe and Japan with Bruce Springsteen, China with Wham! South Africa with Whitney Houston, Canada with Heart and Mexico and South America with Queen.

The Raw Gallery’s new exhibition ‘Glastonbury: Another Stage’ opens today, Friday the 25th of June.
We do have a large temporary fence on Park Street over this weekend due to tram works, but on the positive side, in a way this does add to the Festival atmosphere.
This collection of photographs by UK artist Venetia Dearden will be on show for four weeks, concluding on the 24th of July.
May 13th, 2010
Over the past six years UK Photographer Venetia Dearden has created a temporary on-site photographic studio to document the festival goers, stall holders, charity workers, organisers and celebrity performers that help make Glastonbury the world’s greatest music festival.
This coming June will see over 150,000 people converge on the British dairy farm of festival founder Michael Eavis to celebrate Glastobury’s 40th Anniversary. To coincide with this musical milestone, The Raw Gallery in South Melbourne will become the first commercial gallery in the world to exhibit and offer for sale Venetia’s collection of fine art, limited edition photographs.
Venetia’s Glastonbury festival portraits are shot against a white studio backdrop to remove the sitters from the context of the event. She states
“As a photographer I was magnetically drawn to witness and understand what lies at [Glastonbury’s] core. I decided to create an oasis amongst the crowds where I could meet and document some of the thousands of individuals who travelled from all around the world to make up this vast, eclectic gathering.”
Dearden’s collection of striking and irreverent portraits has been excerpted from the photographer’s newly published book ‘Glastonbury: Another Stage’. Released by German based publisher Kehrer in April 2010, this hardcover book includes 288 colour photographs, a foreword by Michael Eavis and text by Author Candace Bahouth. Unavailable through Australian bookstores, this publication will be available to purchase exclusively through the gallery during the exhibition.
Born in 1975 Venetia Dearden grew up in Somerset, England close to the Glastonbury festival site and she has been attending and working at the festival since a young age. She studied Anthropology at Edinburgh University before a taking postgraduate course in photojournalism at the London College of Printing. Her work was included in the British Photographic Portrait Prize in 2006 and 2007, and two of her works are in the Collection of the National Portrait Gallery in London. Venetia’s photographs have appeared in publications such at Vogue, Wallpaper, Harpers Bazaar and The Sunday Times Magazine and her first book Somerset Stories, Fivepenny Dreams was published by Kehrer in 2008. The first exhibition of Venetia’s Glastonbury portraits is taking place at the National Portrait Gallery in London from April-September 2010.
This unique photographic exhibition will open at The Raw Gallery on Friday the 25th of June until Saturday the 24th of July. Entry is free and we hope to see you here.

This final weekend of February will see the last two days of the current exhibition of AC/DC photographs by Australian photographer Philip Morris. The collection covers the band’s rise to fame and the era of Bon Scott, all shot between 1974 and 1979.
February 9th, 2010
Our latest exhibition – a collection of limited edition photographs of AC/DC by Philip Morris opens today. This collection of images shot between 1974-1979 capture a band on the verge of international fame including shots of iconic frontman Bon Scott.
January 21st, 2010
Peerless Australian Photographer Philip Morris boasts one of the most extensive personal archives of rock music images in the country. During February The Raw Gallery in South Melbourne is proud to exhibit the finest of his AC/DC collection from the 1970’s to coincide with the band’s first Australian tour in nine years.
Beginning on Tuesday the 9th of February, two days before the band’s first Australian dates at Etihad Stadium, Melbourne, this unique exhibition will showcase iconic images from throughout an era of seismic change for a band that has gone on to become one of the highest selling music groups of all time. Morris was on hand to visually record AC/DC from their first foray into their (thankfully short lived) glam phase, the signing on of Bon Scott as lead singer, their first professional promotional shots and five years later, Scott’s final Australian performance. The images will be displayed until Sunday 28th of February.
Philip Morris has also selected eight of his most iconic AC/DC photographs to be launched exclusively through The Raw Gallery as a limited edition box set. This unique collection titled ‘Let There Be Rock’ will contain 11”x14” photographs hand printed, signed and numbered by the photographer and presented in an A3 Black portfolio box, lined with archival acid free paper and with Philip Morris’ signature embossed on the front. The ‘Let There Be Rock’ collection will be limited to an edition of 50 and the inclusive images will be part of the collection on display at the gallery.
In 1974, Morris was shooting Scene Around for ‘Go-Set’ magazine when he landed a job shooting a young Burwood band named AC/DC playing Chequers nightclub, a formerly up-market cabaret venue, now a performance space for Sydney’s burgeoning pub rock scene. Says Morris; “Most of the bands I shot in that mid-70s era were pretty serious but AC/DC were dynamic and never deadpan – they jumped around, reacting off each other.”
From then on, Philip Morris personally captured some of the best known images of Australia’s most successful band as their fame grew both domestically and overseas. He was the only photographer to shoot the group recording in Albert Studio as they produced ‘Dirty Deeds’ in 1976 and to shoot Bon Scott’s final Australian performance in 1979 – an impromptu gig to a crowd of less than 100 people in Cremorne, NSW after a set by the Ferrets. “They came on and jaws just dropped. Angus ripped his shirt off and he was up on the tables … It was unbelievable.”
These images are among the photographs available to buy through The Raw Gallery, as will be a larger than life version of the notorious ‘We Luv AC/DC’ promotional still, shot in Lavender Bay, Sydney for the band’s ‘High Voltage’ LP. According to Morris “Bon wore pink satin overalls and an extra pair of socks down his strides that day”.

MERRI CYR BIO
As a teenager in the early eighties, Merri Cyr left her small town of Adamsville, Rhode Island for New York City as a finalist in a national US modelling contest. After winning and being photographed by world famous fashion photographer Richard Avedon, she embarked on a successful modelling career but soon became more fascinated by what was happening behind the camera. Merri started to shoot documentary photos on the streets of New York and then took up study in Photography through the Pratt institute where she earned her BFA.
Now based in Brooklyn, Merri has been working as a professional photographer since 1988. Primarily focused on portraiture of musicians and artists, her clients include Sony, Warner Brothers, Maverick, Mercury, Electra, Verve, Mercury Nashville, Deutsche Grammophon, Rolling Stone, and Bang Magazine amongst others.
Merri has over fifty album packages to her name. Other works include the documenting of Lillith Fair for Rolling Stone, consigned video works for Sony and Maverick and her book, ‘A Wished For Song – A Portrait of Jeff Buckley’ which includes 360 photos and interviews conducted by Merri personally. ‘A Wished For Song – A Portrait of Jeff Buckley’ is published in Australia through Hal Leonard.

‘JEFF BUCKLEY – A WISHED FOR SONG’
PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION
In the twelve years since his tragic drowning in the Mississippi river, American musician Jeff Buckley has grown in status to that of a true international rock icon.
Brooklyn based photographer Merri Cyr managed to not only document the everyday journey of Buckley’s rise to fame over the five year period from their first meeting in 1992 until his 1997 passing but also to invoke an honest beauty through her imagery that in the wake of his death has become all the more poignant.
On show for the first time in Victoria, The Raw Gallery in South Melbourne will be holding a newly curated solo exhibition of Merri’s work comprising almost 40 images of this iconic musician. Entry will be free to the general public and all images on display will be available for sale as fine art quality limited edition prints all hand signed and numbered by the photographer. The exhibition will run from Friday the 27th of November until Thursday the 24th of December.
Now with over 50 Album packages to her name Merri credits Jeff Buckley with pushing the record company to give her the job of producing an image for his ‘Live at Sin-e’ EP in 1993. “I had not shot album covers before and nobody knew who I was at Sony. He knew I was the one for the job and insisted that it happened. I will never forget that; it opened doors for me creatively and professionally and I believe that is because he trusted me and had faith in my work. I loved him for that.”
After having met initially on a magazine shoot the as yet unknown musician and photographer had formed a bond that saw Merri go on to shoot images that have graced the covers of all of Jeff’s Albums. After the ‘Live at Sin-e’ EP she went on to shoot the now famous ‘Grace’ LP cover image in 1994 and shots used on posthumous release ‘Sketches for My Sweetheart the Drunk’ in 1998. Merri also worked as Jeff’s official tour photographer in 1994 and she continued to record his live New York performances up until his untimely death.
With an archive containing hundreds of images of the musician, Merri published her book ‘A Wished For Song – A Portrait of Jeff Buckley’ in 2002. It is on this collection of portraits that The Raw Gallery’s exhibition has been based.
In 2004, Jeff Buckley’s version of Leonard Cohen’s ‘Hallelujah’ was ranked #259 on American Rolling Stone Magazine’s ”500 Greatest Songs Of All Time” but Jeff’s popularity with Australian fans remains unprecedented. In ‘Triple J’ Radio’s ‘Hottest 100 of all time’ conducted in July 2009, ‘Hallelujah’ ranked at number 3, ‘Last Goodbye’ at number 7, ‘Lover, You Should’ve Come Over’ at number 56 and ‘Grace’ at 69 with UK band Radiohead being the only other act to record four songs in the countdown.
Merri will be in Australia for the launch of The Raw Gallery’s exhibition and on Sunday the 29th of November she will also be conducting a lecture and book signing. Numbers will be strictly limited for this event and advance bookings can be made through The Raw Gallery from mid October.

Are you aware that you might be eligible for an investment allowance of up to 50% for the purchase of art by your business?
Lowensteins Arts Management (Certified Practicing Accountants) have received advice from the ATO confirming that businesses with a turnover under $2 million are eligible to receive an investment allowance of up to 50% on the purchase of artworks purchased for at least $1,000. Also, for businesses with a turnover of more than $2 million turnover an investment allowance of 10% on the purchase of artworks purchased for at least $10,000. This investment allowance is available up to 31st December 2009.
There are a small number of guidelines to enable artworks to be claimed under the new allowance. Among the guidelines accepted by the ATO to qualify for the allowance are:
1. The allowance only applies to NEW artworks created by professional artists registered with an ABN or a recognised overseas artist.
2. Artworks are used in Australia primarily for business purposes (an artwork would not qualify if its exposure was limited to only its owner).
3. Artworks must be tangible, therefore excluding digital art.
4. Artworks cannot be intended for sale in the foreseeable future.
Here is an example of how the investment allowance for a small business with a turnover less than $2 million would work:
A) Print purchased for $2,000 (includes GST).
B) Depreciation $ 20
C) Investment Allowance $1,000
D) Equates to a tax deduction of $1,020 dollars
This investment allowance will only apply up until 31st December 2009, so now is the right time to acquire art for a business.
Of course, The Raw Gallery recommends you consult your accountant before making any purchase.

Thank you to Ross Wilson, icon of the Australian music industry (Daddy Cool, Mondo Rock and now solo performer) for the mention he has given The ‘Solid Rock’ Exhibition in the News section of his website. The exhibition features a rare shot of Ross’ first professional band ‘The Party Machine’ shot by Colin Beard in 1968 for ‘Go-Set’ Magazine.

August 20th, 2009
Commencing with a VIP launch on Thursday 20th of August 2009, The Raw Gallery in South Melbourne is pleased to present its debut Photographic exhibition – a showcase aimed at celebrating iconic Australian musicians from the 1960s through to today.
This free exhibition will be open to the public over a period of four weeks from Friday the 21st August until Wednesday 16th of September.
Unlike their international contemporaries, the brilliant work of Australia’s finest “home-grown” rock photographers from the past five decades has largely gone unrecognised and unheralded. Despite this, photographers working in the Australian music industry have managed to produce a large collection of outstanding imagery charting the progression of our most talented and best-loved musicians.
The shots featured in this exhibition have graced album covers, promotional material and magazine articles over the years however, this is the first time many of these images – and more besides – have been assembled together, exhibited and made available to the public as limited edition Fine Art prints.
The exhibition features the work of Philip Morris, Wendy McDougall, Greg Noakes, Colin Beard, Richard Sharman, Kim Tonelli, David Corio, Craig Golding, Serge Thomann, Mitchell Connelly, Kirsty Umback and Kane Hibberd. The Raw Gallery will be displaying over 35 archival quality prints, featuring such subjects as Nick Cave and the Birthday Party, AC/DC, The Church, The Presets, Cold Chisel, Paul Kelly, The Easybeats, INXS and many more. This is the first exhibition of its kind in Australia. However, this is by no means a definitive anthology of Australian artists, only a representative sample of the diverse and high-quality material available through The Raw Gallery.
